Squamish, BC

Located at the head of Howe Sound, surrounded by the magnificent peaks of the Coast Mountains to the east, the Tantalus Mountains to the west, and 22 recreational activities within a 15 minute drive, it is no wonder Squamish is rated one of the Top 10 Recreational Destinations in Canada. Rent a sailing board or bring your own -- famous for its top-notch breezes, Squamish, which means "Mother of the Wind" in Coast Salish, attracts windsurfers from across Canada hoping to achieve top speeds of more than 60 km/h (36 mph). Whether you test the waters yourself, or enjoy the fiesta of brightly coloured sails from the shore, you'll soon understand why Squamish is Canada's Windsurfing Capital.

It's also a mecca for rockclimbers and rappellers. Murrin Lake Provincial Park offers a forgiving face for beginner and intermediate climbers, while the Stawamus Chief monolith, the second largest in the world, boasts more than 200 climbing routes on its monstrous 652-m face(2139-ft.). Climb your way to the top, or enjoy the view from above in a dramatic flight-seeing tour. Featured in action flicks dangling the likes of Sylvester Stallone and other heroes, a glimpse of the Stawamus Chief will leave you awe-struck - even if you keep both feet firmly planted on the ground. For those who prefer the milder thrills of life, a trip to the BC Museum of Mining is in order. Don your hardhat and embark on an underground tour of the historic Britannia Mines. Once the largest copper producer in the British Empire, these mines promise a true glimpse into the life of the good ol' fashioned hardrock miner. History also abounds at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. Browse the largest collection of vintage rolling stock, locomotives, and artifacts in Western Canada, before boarding the miniature train for a ride around the grounds.
